Airport Technician

The days and work hours for this position are:  Sunday - Thursday, 8:00am - 5:00pm

 ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: For purposes of 42 USC 12101

1. Performs both semi-skilled and skilled labor in the construction, maintenance, and repair work of airport buildings, hangers, pavement, airfield lighting, security lighting, security fencing, aviation fuel storage and dispensing, as well as other facilities and grounds.
2. Fuels and moves aircrafts and other vehicles.
3. Performs daily inspections of all airport safety, security and operational areas and equipment including runway and taxiways, airfield lighting, parking aprons, hangers, terminal buildings, fuel storage areas and perimeter fences and gates for compliance with Federal, State, and local airport rules and regulations.
4. Provides assistance during aircraft emergencies (in conjunction with Fire, Police and FAA personnel), facility equipment failure, airfield navigational aides, airfield lighting failures, building/structure emergencies, pavement failures, hazardous incidents and related emergency situations.
5. Maintains work records, including complaint resolutions, maintenance and repair logs, vehicle inspection forms, daily work logs, FAA inspection records and other documentation.
6. Assists the public; responds to routine questions or complaints and requests for service; initiates problem resolution.
7. Operates a snowplow to removes snow and ice during the winter months.

Airport Technician II - Independently performs the above listed responsibilities under the general presence of either the Airport Operations Supervisor or Airport Manager. 

Airport Technician III - Independently performs the above listed responsibilities and may act as a lead worker to the Airport Technician I and II.

• Interpret, apply and stay current on changing federal, state, county and local guidelines and regulations pertaining to airport operations and maintenance.
• Operate and coordinate daily activities in close proximity to both large and small aircraft, corporate jets and student pilots.
• Operate a motor vehicle and related equipment skillfully, safely and in accordance with traffic laws and regulations and to diagnose and resolve equipment problems.
• Work a non-traditional, flexible schedule to include work during evening hours, on weekends and holidays.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. The primary duties of this position are performed in an outdoor environment that may involve exposure to adverse weather conditions, aviation and vehicular traffic, and related hazards including low to medium electrical voltage, the use of power tools and equipment and hazardous chemicals and materials.
2. Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing, or other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodations, which permits the employee to discern verbal instructions, operate aviation and emergency radios, discern emergency warnings and alarms, and understand department and safety rules and regulations.
3. Sufficient visual acuity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, comprehend written work instructions and work orders, technical manuals, and related diagrams, and move through unfamiliar buildings and work sites.
4. Sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to operate a personal computer, operate equipment, operate hand and power tools and to make repairs and adjustments to equipment.
5. Sufficient strength to lift and carry objects up to fifty (50) pounds for varying distances.
6. Sufficient body flexibility, mobility, stamina, and balance to perform maintenance and repair operations that require bending, stooping, kneeling, stretching and other physical exertions including working under vehicles, climbing, and working on ladders and power lifts up to 35 feet high, on building roofs and towers and in an airport environment.
7. Ability to perform relatively heavy manual work for extended periods of time and the ability to withstand exposure to variable weather conditions.

EQUIPMENT OPERATED

Fuel truck, motor vehicles, computer, mowers, GPU, snow broom, tractors, tug, computer software (e.g., Microsoft Office, AVman, and other applicable computer software.)

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

1. Completion of secondary education or equivalent (high school diploma or GED).
2. Possess some technical training or coursework to ensure the ability to read, write, and perform basic math.
3. Experience in grounds or facilities maintenance operations, preferably at an airport.
4. Technician II - One (1) or more years of experience working as an Airport Technician, ground support, or similar role.
5. Technician III - Three or more years of experience as an Airport Technician at a general aviation airport. 
6. Possession of a valid State of Ohio Motor Vehicle Operator's License and ability to maintain insurability under the City's vehicle insurance policy.
7. Possession of a valid State of Ohio Motor Vehicle Commercial Drivers' License, Class B (class A preferred), including tanker endorsement, or the ability to obtain license within six (6) month probationary period. 
8. Any combination of training and experience which will indicate the possession of the skills, knowledge and abilities listed below.

**This position is staffed Sunday through Thursday (no exceptions) and performs on-call (after hours) duties.
