Job Description

Clinical Research Assistant II

SUMMARY

The goal of our laboratory is to investigate disturbances in the sleep and wake cycle in rodent models of traumatic brain injury (TBI), post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD), and autism, and to translate these findings to human subjects. We collect and analyze biosignals in rodents and humans and follow outcomes over time in these disease models. We seek highly motivated, highly skilled, analytical, and creative people who can work independently and efficiently in a fast-paced research environment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

- Ability and willingness to work with multiple members of the laboratory and assist where needed in experiments involving both human and animal subjects.

- Ability to stay highly organized with electronic management of large datasets, especially with potential for telework projects.

- Ability to telework and communicate with lab members regularly

JOB DUTIES

- Prepare research projects for Institutional Review Board (IRB) submission and review process

- Plan & conduct human research studies including participant recruitment and retention

- Coding as it relates to upcoming and ongoing experiments

- Data entry into shared database and data management

- Signal processing of EEG and EMG signals and/or sleep scoring

- Collect and/or process behavioral data in animal and/or human subjects

- Present data, make figures/posters, write abstracts and manuscripts;

- Phone and video conferences as teleworking may require

- Train other personnel in the above techniques as needed

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Formal or informal experience with the following is desired:

  1. College level coursework in biology, psychology, engineering, or public health.
  2. At least 1 year of undergraduate research experience or equivalent research exposure.

COMPUTER SKILLS

- Advanced skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint

- Proficiency or ability to learn statistical programs such as GraphPad Prism and IBM SPSS

- Proficiency or ability to learn programming languages such as R, Python, and/or MATLAB

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must occasionally lift and carry up to 10 pounds. The employee is frequently required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk; and regularly reach with hands or arms.

Working Conditions:

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

  • Primary job location is located on the VA Portland Health Care System campus.
