Seeking a Communications Assistant/Science Writer to join the Communications Program of one of the nation’s leading nonprofit ecological research institutes.
At Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies, our scientists investigate the complex interactions that govern the natural world and the impacts of climate change on ecosystems. Their findings lead to more effective resource management, policy actions, and environmental literacy. Cary staff are global experts in the ecology of: cities, disease, forests, and freshwater.

The ideal candidate will be a creative storyteller with experience translating complex scientific issues in a way that resonates with diverse audiences, with a focus on media and the public.
Primary job duties:
● Draft press releases (often for peer-reviewed journal articles)
● Assist with press release promotion, including building media lists, networking with reporters, and tracking press uptake via media monitoring software
● Create engaging content for Cary’s website, newsletters (print and digital), and social media feeds, with an eye toward SEO and engagement
● Help network public-facing Cary events
● As time allows, help other departments with writing/editing needs
Required skills:
● Relevant bachelor’s degree with some coursework in the environmental sciences; master’s preferred
● Experience communicating science
● Excellent writing and editing skills
● An eye for detail, and the ability to execute and track multiple projects simultaneously
● Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Google Docs/Sheets, Excel, Canva, InDesign, Photoshop, Meltwater, and web editing via a CMS is desirable; training can be provided
This is a salaried, exempt, benefitted, full time position of 35 weekly hours. The salary range is $44,500 to $54,500. The Institute is based in Millbrook, NY; there is an option for some remote work. Part-time employment is possible for the right candidate. The Communications Assistant/Science Writer reports to the Communications Director, and will be expected to work closely with scientific staff.
The ability to spend time at the Institute is important, particularly in the first year of the position. Flexibility to work some evenings or weekends required (typically only 1x a month). Must be authorized to work in the U.S. Proof of full COVID-19 vaccination is required for employment.
