The Virginia Department of Taxation (Virginia Tax) seeks qualified professionals to apply for the position of Director of Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (DE&I). This newly-created position was established in response to legislation approved in 2021 (HB 1993), which directs state agencies to establish and maintain diversity and inclusion strategic plans, to recruit and retain a diverse workforce, and to develop a culture that respects and affirms diversity. The Director will report to the Tax Commissioner and will collaborate with members of the leadership team, including the Deputy Commissioner, Chief Information Officer, Chief Administrative Officer, and Director of Human Resources & Learning, to execute the department’s first comprehensive Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion strategic plan.

· The incumbent will have the opportunity to define this new role and build out the DE&I functional area within the agency. The Director will advise the Commissioner and leadership team on policies, issues, and trends related to DE&I. In partnership with agency leaders, the Director will be expected to work within and across organizational areas to implement programs and initiatives that make DE&I integral to the climate and culture of Virginia Tax.
· The successful candidate will be a self-starter and a confident and persuasive leader with the ability to communicate effectively at the executive, supervisory, and frontline levels. Additionally, the successful candidate will demonstrate cultural competency and a strong grasp of organizational development, change management, and strategy implementation. Qualifications: A Bachelor’s degree and at least five (5) years of experience in diversity, equity, and inclusion, or an equivalent combination of education and experience; demonstrated knowledge and understanding of current DE&I practices and trends; excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills; demonstrated experience in organizational development and/or change management.
