Job Description

Fire Chief, Morton Grove, IL (pop. est. 23,270). Morton Grove is a mature inner-ring suburb of Chicago with immediate access to interstate, commuter rail and many recreational venues. The Village is a welcoming place to live, work and raise a family with a tagline aptly describing it as “Incredibly Close and Amazingly Open!”. The Village is comprised of 5.09 square miles, where residents enjoy the comforts of suburban living, commercial corridors with retail centers, industrial districts and professional corporate areas with a mix of small businesses and national retailers supporting the community. It is a short commute to all that the City of Chicago has to offer and is a community rich in diversity. The Village is seeking a new Fire Chief after the retirement of its current Chief. The Fire Chief is appointed by the Village President and reports to the Village Administrator.

The Morton Grove Fire Department is a career department comprised of 45 members including 40 sworn fire personnel responding from two (2) stations. The department provides fire suppression, advanced life support emergency medical services, extrication, fire prevention, code enforcement, public education, hazardous material response, technical rescue, fire investigation, water rescue and ice surface rescue. It enjoys well developed auto aid and mutual aid agreements that provides outstanding service to the community and its neighbors. The department contracts dispatch services from the Regional Emergency Dispatch (RED) Center and is a member of the Northern Illinois Public Safety Training Academy (NIPSTA) as well as a member of MABAS Division 3 in Illinois. The department members within the collective bargaining group are represented by IAFF Local 2178. In 2020 the department responded to 3,530 emergency alarms (down 14% due to the COVID Pandemic) and has an ISO Class 3 rating. The Fire Department has an annual budget (FY2021) of $9.97 million. The Fire Chief also directs the Village’s Emergency Management Agency and coordinates disaster preparedness and response efforts consistent with the Illinois Emergency Management Agency Act and the Illinois Emergency Management Agency Administrative Code.

Successful candidates should possess the core course requirements towards a bachelor’s degree in Fire Science or related field with a minimum of six (6) years of progressively responsible experience in fire and rescue administration (Shift Commander or higher), emergency medical services, firefighting, emergency management and hazardous materials. A Master’s Degree in Fire Science, Public Administration or other related fields is preferred. Completion of Advanced Incident Command training and/or actively pursuing state certification as a Chief Fire Officer (State of Illinois), Chief Fire Officer designation from CPSE, and/or national Executive Fire Officer designation through the National Fire Academy is required.

The annual salary for this position is $145,000 +/- depending upon qualifications. The Village of Morton Grove, IL also offers an attractive and competitive benefits package.
