Project Assistant
Temporary in Millbrook, NY
Policy and public health goals prioritize increasing impervious surfaces and tree canopy to protect urban ecosystems and human health. Current investment in urban sustainability across NY also aims to provide equitable access to nature. These 'greening' efforts likely change habitat and connectivity for local wildlife, with a potential for both predictable and surprising outcomes for human and wildlife health. This project is a partnership with Scenic Hudson’s River Cities Program and seeks to document and define current and changing biodiversity across the matrix of green spaces in Newburgh, Poughkeepsie, and Kingston. In fall 2024, a series of protocols will be piloted in the City of Poughkeepsie.
Qualifications: Successful candidates must be reliable and physically able to hike short distances, climb a ladder carrying up to 10 pounds, and be eager to participate in community-engaged urban ecology. The ability to work 2 mornings weekly (Monday-Friday) and an occasional Saturday is a requirement.
The work schedule is up to 10 hours weekly from September 25 through November 15, 2024. There may be the opportunity to extend the position through repeated sampling bouts in winter and spring 2025. Work in fall 2024 will occur predominantly in Poughkeepsie, although transportation assistance may be requested.
Position reports to Dr. Shannon LaDeau. This is an hourly, temporary, non-exempt, non-benefited position. Hourly wage is $20-$22 per hour, commensurate with education and experience. Candidates must be authorized to work in the U.S.
Position is open until September 16, 2024 or until filled.
