Job Title: Research Assistant II

Range: $37,634 - $46,618


The Portland VA Research Foundation (in Portland, Oregon), is recruiting for a full- time research assistant for a clinical research project. The incumbent will coordinate Dr Kathryn Chung's Merit review grant. The grant, will examine the association of statin use and dyskinesia in two convenience samples Parkinson's disease patients in the Veterans Administration (VA) Health Care System.

This is a four- year grant and incumbent will be responsible for recruitment of 120 subjects. RA will recruit and conduct initial and follow up visits with subjects for this trial The NCM will track participants enrolled in the trial and offer decision support. The RA will document all services provided to participants in a research database.


As part of a clinical research study, meet one-to-one with participants with Parkinson's Disease to recruit, schedule and coordinate subject visits, conduct EKG's, conduct assessments and maintain the subject charts and documentation of visits. Enter data as per protocol for patient visits, and maintain database as per instructions; submit and maintain all IRB required documentation per research guidelines.


Research Participant Contact, Safety, and Security (80 percent)

The Research Assistant will perform a research support tasks under the guidance of the PADRECC RN coordinator and the investigator. Tasks will be commensurate with training and experience and may include:

  • Managing and initiating communications/paperwork related to Institutional Review Board approvals or data requests;
  • Recruiting, scheduling and coordinating research visits with study participants and staff;
  • Performing study assessments as required per protocol;
  • Perform EKG's and blood draws as required by protocol
  • Data entry, database management, providing analysis as requested;
  • Organizing meetings with PI and staff
  • Processing, management and shipping of study specimens;
  • Maintains all study participants records
  • Conveys pertinent information as required to primary investigator and other study personnel

Research Study Support (20 percent)

  • Completing additional administrative/research tasks to support individual projects within the PADRECC

Preference to have a bachelor's degree with one- two years of clinical research experience as a coordinator.

Prefer to have experience with (OHSU) EIRB and the use of (OHSU) OCTRI for study visits for subjects


Must be proficient in spoken and written English.


Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.


Job requires computer skills which will be in constant use. Must be adept at using various applications including database, spreadsheet, word processing, and e-mail. Adept at using Microsoft office suite including Excel and Access. Awareness of network specific requirements for use of multi-user databases.


Ability to apply common sense in situations involving safety and integrity of persons, environment, materials and data, commensurate with the required level of education and research experience. Sufficient understanding to carry out instructions competently, when furnished in written, oral, or diagram form at a level of detail expected for those with the required educational and technical background. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations


Prefer Blood drawing certification.
